Cisco Multi-protocol Storage Essentials v1.0 (CMSE) - 5-day Course
Course Designed and Developed for Cisco by CCI

Course Description

Leveraging an organization’s existing Fibre Channel, storage area networking infrastructure to gain efficiencies in performance, reliability, and total cost of ownership was a daunting and expensive task. This task is now made simpler and less costly using Cisco’s MDS 9000 family of products. Using the MDS 9000 IP Services Module, organizations have the capability to handle IP related storage transport solutions on the same physical chassis that handles Fibre Channel and they can extend the coverage of their SAN to the Metropolitan or Wide Area Network (MAN/WAN).

This course will teach you have to consolidate distributed storage using iSCSI, how to cost effectively connect remote SAN Islands using FCIP and how maximize the use of FCIP and iSCSI when deploying Cisco SAN solutions. You will get an overview of the full suite of SAN extension solutions that Cisco offers their SAN customers including and introduction Optical DWD and CWDM solutions. The details of the iSCSI and FCIP protocols will be described and you will learn how to configure and troubleshoot these protocols in a “real-world” lab environment for the MDS 9000 IP services module as well as the Cisco 7200/7400 router with an FCIP port adapter.

Course Objectives

In this course you will learn how to:

  • Understand where to position Cisco’s FCIP and iSCSI solutions to cost effectively consolidate and extend your customers SAN
  • Learn the Cisco IPS Module features and performance optimization for transporting SAN traffic over a TCP/IP network
  • Detail FCIP and its function on the MDS-9000
  • Detail iSCSI and its function on the MDS-9000
  • Use hands-on labs to Configure FCIP on the MDS-9000
  • Use hands on labs to Configure iSCSI on the MDS-9000
  • Learn how to Implement IP Services within an MDS-9000 Fabric Switch environment
  • Explore Troubleshooting scenario in a multi-protocol environment using the MDS 9000 and the IPS Module
  • Learn how to configure and troubleshoot FCIP on the 7200 router using the FCIP port adapter
  • Understand interoperability between the MDS 9000 IPS module and the Cisco FCIP port adapter

Intended Audience

The audience for CMSE is Cisco System SEs working on MDS-9000 solutions; OSM and OSM Partner SEs; Customer Support and Field Technician personnel deploying and configuring IP Services on the MDS-9000; Technical professionals within companies who are deploying the MDS-9000 product.

Prerequisites

Student prerequisites are as follows:

  • MDS-9000 Configuration and Troubleshooting course
  • Intermediate knowledge of TCP/IP and Storage Area Networking

Course Outline

CSDE teaches the details of “how to determine requirements for” and “how to design” high performance, high available, secure, and scalable SANs incorporating the MDS 9000 series products for small enterprises, isolated SANs, and geographically dispersed SANs. It builds upon the “what are the features and concepts behind SAN and Fibre Channel for the MDS 9000” taught in MDSCT and FCIP and iSCSI concepts taught in CMSE.
